# What an Ice Maker Repair Involves — and Which Ones Are Cheap

## Three machines, one word

"Ice maker" covers three genuinely different appliances in U-Line's catalog, and the difference in what they cost to repair is not about size.

**A crescent ice maker** freezes water in a mold and releases the cubes with a heater. A fill valve, a mold, a heater, a mechanical bin arm. It is the simplest cold appliance in the whole range and U-Line has been building them since 1962. It sits lowest.

**A clear ice machine** freezes moving water slowly so the ice forms dense and transparent. The maker's own relay chart for these boards names a water dispense valve, a circulation pump, a water inlet valve, a hot gas valve and a condenser fan — five circuits a crescent maker does not have. It sits in the middle.

**A nugget machine** freezes a thin layer on the wall of a cylinder and drives an auger through it. An auger, a gearbox, a motor and a cylinder, all doing continuous mechanical work nothing else in the range does. It sits highest, and it is the one where waiting costs the most.

## The repairs that are not about the machine

Two jobs come up on all three and are usually cheaper than any of the above:

**[Water supply](/services/water-inlet-valve-and-supply-repair/).** Everything between the shut-off and the reservoir — the valve, the filter, the line, the inlet valve. This is the single most common answer to "it has stopped making ice", and the first three checks in it cost nothing.

**[Drain and drain pump](/services/drain-pump-and-drain-repair/).** Where a machine is installed with no gravity drain, it has a pump, and U-Line logs a circuit error for it — P1, qualified as *only if unit has drain pump*. Half of a drain diagnosis is establishing which installation you have, and the answer is more often a kinked hose than a failed pump.

## The one that saves money

**[Cleaning and descaling](/services/ice-machine-cleaning-and-descaling/)** is the cheapest service on this site and the one that prevents the most expensive.

The machine asks for it: after six cumulative months of ice making, the ice, no water and drain lamps flicker twice each in turn, and they keep going until the cycle is run. In South Florida six months is optimistic rather than generous.

What scale does, in order of what it costs:

- **Insulates the evaporator surface** — production drops, ice comes out thin and cloudy.- **Coats the level sensing** — the machine misjudges how much water it has, which is what the logged numbers 11 and 12 are about.- **Gets between the auger and the cylinder on a nugget machine** — an abrasive in a bearing surface, which ends at the gearbox.- **Narrows the drain** — which on a built-in machine is a water-in-the-cabinetry problem rather than an appliance one.

The reliable route from the cheapest service on this site to one of the dearest is three lamps flickering for a year while somebody means to get round to it.

## What moves a figure once you are looking at one

Nothing here is a final price. Every figure is a **from**, and what moves it on an ice machine specifically:

- **Access.** Almost all of these are built in, plumbed, and sometimes on a pump. Getting one out and back is real work.- **Outdoors.** Six of U-Line's ice models live outside. Salt corrodes the fixings around a repair as well as the coil.- **How long it ran after it went wrong.** This matters most on a nugget machine: a machine switched off at the first grinding noise needs an auger; one that was left running needs what is behind it too.- **Whether the model is still made.** Twenty of the seventy-six models in the catalog are not.

## Before you book anything

Three checks, all free, and they end a real share of these calls:

- **Look at the lamps.** A lit NO WATER lamp is the maker's own answer — low water supply. Three lamps flickering twice each is a cleaning request rather than a problem.- **Find the shut-off valve** behind or under the machine and confirm it is open. It gets closed during other work more often than anybody admits.- **Check the bin arm** on a crescent maker. Resting up means the machine has been told the bin is full, and it will sit there indefinitely being perfectly healthy.
