# U-Line: The display has gone dark but the unit is still running

### What the appliance is actually doing

Sabbath mode. The maker’s description on the older controls: the interior light and display go dark and remain so until the user resets the mode, and the unit continues to operate. On the current 3 and 4 Class boards it goes further — the display goes blank, the cabinet lights stay off, all audible alarms and alerts are inactive, and the evaporator fans may not stop when the door is opened. A unit in this mode looks dead and is working perfectly.

### Quoted rather than interpreted

>
Interior light and display will go dark and remain so until user resets mode – unit continues to operate.

From CONTROL FUNCTION GUIDE, in a User Guide & Service Manual downloaded from U-Line’s own site. Nothing on this page is decoded beyond what that sentence says.

### What to do about it

- Put your hand inside. If the cabinet is cold, the appliance is running and this is a mode rather than a failure.
- On the older controls, hold the light key for five seconds to leave the mode. On the current ones, hold any of the four control buttons or the power button for three seconds.
- Remember that the alarms are off in this mode. A door left open in Sabbath mode will not beep, which is worth knowing before deciding the alarm is broken.
- If the display is dark AND the cabinet is not cold, this is not Sabbath mode and the next place to look is power — the maker’s own flow chart starts at the wall outlet, then the main control’s voltage input, then fuse F1.

### Where this goes next

The job this usually becomes is [control board and display repair](/services/control-board-and-display-repair/), and every one of those pages carries a starting figure and the reasons that move it. If it turns out to be nothing — and on this make a real share of these are modes rather than problems — the visit ends there and you pay the diagnostic and nothing else, or call [(305) 851-2207](tel:+13058512207) and describe what the display is doing before booking anything.

**u line refrigerator display not working** is the phrase, and a dark display on a cold cabinet is very often a mode somebody enabled by accident.
