# U-Line it cycles on and off in a strange rhythm

### Time it before you call

Sit with it for an hour and write down when the compressor starts and stops. A rhythm that repeats to the minute regardless of how full the cabinet is or how warm the room is, is not a thermostat doing its job — it is a timer standing in for one.

### The rhythm is the diagnosis

U-Line publishes the numbers, which is unusual and useful. When a zone thermistor fails on a 2000 Series unit the control gives up on temperature and runs a fixed cycle instead — ten minutes on, forty minutes off — to keep the contents safe until somebody looks at it. It shows nothing on the display and it behaves normally in every other way.

### What that means for the repair

It means a cabinet in this state is not failing; it is being protected. It also means the appliance already knows exactly what is wrong and has written it down, as E1, E2, E5 or E6 in a log behind a hidden key. Reading that log turns this from a mystery into a sensor.

A board programmed to the wrong model

Every U-Line control carries a two-digit model number and takes its cycle timings from it. A replacement board that was never programmed runs another machine's schedule.

Short cycling on a hot condenser

A compressor cutting out on its own overload and restarting when it cools. The rhythm is less regular than the backup mode's and the condenser is hot to the touch.

Write down the timings

Start and stop, over an hour or two. A rhythm that repeats to the minute regardless of load is a timer, not a thermostat.

Load the cabinet and see if anything changes

A working control responds to a warm bottle going in. A backup mode does not.

Feel the condenser

Hot to the touch and cycling irregularly points at a compressor cutting out on its own overload rather than at the control.
