# U-Line the door will not close or seal

### Test the seal, not the door

Close a slip of paper in the door and pull. Do it at eight or ten points around the perimeter, not just at the handle. Where it slides out freely, the seal is not sealing — and that place is very often nowhere near where the complaint is.

### Three problems that look like one

A door that will not close, a door that closes and does not seal, and a door that seals everywhere except one place are three different repairs with three different bills. The paper test separates them in about a minute, and it is worth doing before anybody is called.

### On a built-in appliance, the cabinetry gets a vote

Most U-Line units are set into a run and many carry a customer’s own cabinet front. Built-in runs settle over years, so a door that was square when the kitchen was fitted can be held open by a neighbor rather than by anything wrong with the appliance. Establishing which has moved comes before adjusting anything.

Something inside holding it

A bin one position too far out, a bottle rack, a shelf that has been moved. Free, and the answer more often than the seal.

The seal itself

Taken a set, torn, or pulled out of its channel. The cheapest part on the appliance that costs you temperature.

Alignment, hinge or door stop

The maker publishes a door swing, door stop and door adjust procedure and many models have a reversible hinge. Set to specification rather than to eye.

An integrated panel that has moved

A customer's own cabinet front has its own weight and its own fixings, and it is aligned to the cabinetry rather than to the appliance.

Paper-test at eight or ten points

Not just at the handle. Where the paper slides out freely, the seal is not gripping, and it is usually not where the complaint is.

Empty the door and the front of the shelves

A bin one position out or a bottle rack is free to fix and is the answer surprisingly often.

Watch the door close from open

It should pull itself in over the last inch. A door that stops short is alignment rather than seal.

Look along the gap against the cabinetry

An even gap means the appliance is square. An uneven one means something has moved, and it is not always the appliance.

Then it is not closing, and the door alert will keep telling you so. A door that needs a push is an alignment or a hinge, and it will cost you temperature every hour in between.

They usually do. A seal that has taken a set is not torn or obviously damaged; it has simply stopped springing back, and only the paper test shows it.
