# U-Line not cold enough

### Measure the cabinet, not the display

Put a thermometer in a bottle of water inside the cabinet, close the door and leave it twenty-four hours. It is the maker's own method, and on this appliance it settles more than the display can: the display shows what the control believes, and the control is reading a sensor that may be the whole problem.

### A few degrees is a symptom, not a tolerance

A cabinet that sits two or three degrees above its set point and never arrives is not a cabinet working at the edge of its ability. It is a cabinet with something specific wrong, and on this make the most likely something is a temperature sensor — which the appliance deliberately does not tell you about.

### Why the display is not evidence

The display shows what the control believes, and the control believes its sensors. When one has failed the display can read perfectly while the cabinet is nowhere near it. That is why every diagnosis on this page starts with an independent thermometer rather than with the number on the front.

Self Preservation Mode after a sensor failure

The maker's backup mode. A fixed duty cycle regardless of what the cabinet needs, chosen to protect the contents until a repair. It will hold food and it will not hold a set point.

The condenser and the grille

The first thing the manual says to check, and the cheapest. Nothing blocking the front grille, and a coil that is clean.

A door that is not sealing along its whole run

A gap on the hinge side low down leaks continuously and is invisible from the front.

Where the unit is installed

The manual names excessive ambient temperature and direct sunlight. An outdoor unit or one beside an oven is being asked for more than it was built for.

Defrost running wrong

Interval and duration are settings on this control, and a board programmed to the wrong model runs the wrong ones.

Measure with a bottle of water

Twenty-four hours, door closed, thermometer in the bottle. Air temperature and product temperature are different numbers and the maker says so.

Clear the grille and look at the coil

Nothing in front of the grille at the bottom, and a coil that is not grey with lint. This is the maker's own first answer.

Paper-test the door all the way round

Close a slip of paper in the door and pull, at eight or ten points. Where it slides out freely, the seal is not sealing there.

Ask what changed

A drift that started the week the kitchen was re-floored, or after a power cut, or after a board was replaced, is a different story from one nobody can date.

### It only struggles in the afternoon.

That is the ambient, and it points at heat rejection rather than at cold production — the condenser, the grille, and whether the appliance has anywhere to put the heat it removes. It is the cheapest end of this list.

### Could it just need a gas top-up?

No. A sealed system is sealed; it does not consume refrigerant. If it is low, it is low because it is leaking, and topping it up without finding the leak is money spent twice.
