# U-Line water under the unit

### Work out whether this appliance is plumbed

An ice machine has an inlet, a reservoir and a drain, and any of the three can do this. A refrigerator or a wine cooler has only defrost melt water and a drain pan, so the list is much shorter — and on those a leak is usually condensation that has found the wrong route.

### The damage is not where the water is

On a built-in appliance, water leaves the machine and goes straight into the carcase and the substrate. By the time there is something visible on the floor in front, the joinery has been wet for a while — which is why this is one of the two symptoms on this site we would rather look at the same day.

### Two very different lists

If the appliance takes water, the list is the inlet valve, the reservoir, the drain and the pump, and the maker logs a pump circuit error where a pump exists. If it does not, the list is defrost melt water that is not reaching the pan, and condensation running off a cabinet that is working hard in a humid room.

The inlet valve or the supply line

On any machine that takes water. Shut the supply off first; this is the cause that does the most damage per hour.

The drain, or the drain pump

A kinked hose, a blocked run, or a pump that is not moving what it should. The maker logs a pump circuit error where a pump exists.

Defrost water that is not reaching the pan

On a cold cabinet with no plumbing, this is most of the list. A blocked drain path in the cabinet sends melt water into the base.

Condensation running off the cabinet

In this climate, on a hard-working unit, external condensation can be enough to leave water on the floor without anything having failed.

Find out whether the appliance is plumbed

An ice machine takes water in and puts it out. A wine cooler has only defrost melt and a drain pan, so the list is much shorter.

Shut the supply off if there is one

First, before diagnosing. It is the cause that does the most damage per hour.

Follow the drain hose

Kinks, tight bends and a run that has fallen the wrong way are all common behind a built-in machine.

Look at the cabinet base

Swelling, staining or a soft edge means this has been going on longer than the puddle suggests.

Find it early, because it goes into the joinery

### It is only a small amount, occasionally.

Occasional and small is still worth tracing on a built-in unit, because the water is not evaporating off a tiled floor — it is going into the cabinet.

### Could it be the ice bin melting?

Yes, and on a machine that is not being used much that is exactly what happens. Melt water is supposed to go down the drain; if the drain is slow it goes elsewhere.
