    Find out when it is loudest

    Just after starting, all the time, or only during defrost. Each points somewhere different.

    Check the unit is level and not touching

    A built-in appliance resting on three feet, or pressed against joinery, passes vibration into the cabinetry, which does the amplifying.

    Compare against what is normal

    The manual lists it: a compressor hum, refrigerant like boiling liquid, air through the condenser, water dripping into the drain pan during defrost.

    On a nugget machine, stop it

    Grinding or laboring is the auger, and continuing to run it damages the gearbox behind it.

Find out whether it is a noise or the noise

Hard floors, tiled walls and a run of cabinetry reflect appliance sound, and the manual says so outright. A unit that has just been installed, or a room that has just been re-floored, can produce a complaint about an appliance that has not changed at all.

The maker names two causes, and they are both free

U-Line's own troubleshooting table gives exactly two reasons a unit is noisy: refrigeration tubing touching the cabinet, which is repositioned, and a fan blade obstructed by wiring, foam insulation or packaging material, which is removed. A useful number of these calls end without a part.
