Thermistor 1 open. In plain terms, the cabinet sensor — the one reading the compartment you keep things in, and the control has lost it. An open circuit is a sensor or a harness that has stopped answering at all. This is the failure behind the complaint that brings most U-Line units to us, and the appliance hides it well. The maker's own words: if a zone thermistor fails, the unit continues to cool in a backup mode — Self Preservation Mode — to preserve the integrity of the contents, and otherwise operates normally. On the 2000 Series that backup is ten minutes on and forty minutes off. So a cabinet with a dead sensor still hums, still lights up, still says nothing at all, and simply never holds its set point.

An open circuit is a sensor or a harness that has stopped answering at all. This is the failure behind the complaint that brings most U-Line units to us, and the appliance hides it well. Where this number actually lives

Not on your display. Every U-Line manual that carries a code table says the same sentence: all errors are logged in memory, and only the door error is displayed and has an audible signal. So unless this is a door, you will not see it — it is in an error log reached by holding a hidden key for ten seconds and scrolling to the log option. That is worth knowing before you spend an evening looking for a number the appliance was never going to show you.

What to do about it

  1. Do not clear the log before somebody has read it. The list is the evidence, and clearing it throws away the order the errors happened in.
  2. Ask for the error log to be read. On this make the numbers live in the control's service menu — a hidden key held for ten seconds, then option 14 on the older boards and option 21 on the current ones — and the log scrolls the errors in the order they happened.
  3. Expect the sensor itself to be checked rather than replaced on sight. The maker's own figure is 16.1k ohms in an ice-water bath, plus or minus five percent, and it also says a corroded connection changes the reading on its way to the board — which is why every thermistor connection leaves the factory with dielectric grease on it.
  4. Have the model and serial numbers ready. They are on a plate on the upper right or the rear wall of the interior, and the board also has to be programmed to the right model number for its own diagnostics to mean anything.
