What to do about it
- Close the door and listen. If the tone stops and the icon clears, the appliance was right and the job is done.
- If it keeps sounding with the door shut, the switch is reporting a door that is closed. On the plunger type that is the plunger; on the glass-door models it is a reed switch and a magnet that has drifted out of alignment.
- Look at what is holding the door open before blaming the seal — a bin one position too far out, a bottle rack, a drawer front that has dropped a few millimeters inside a run of built-in cabinetry.
- A door that has been open five minutes in a Miami kitchen has also just put a great deal of humid air into the cabinet, so expect frost or condensation for a cycle or two afterwards. That part is normal.
