Symptom

U-Line the ice maker keeps taking water

A machine that fills continuously, overflows, or keeps its inlet valve open is doing something with a short list of causes — and one of them will damage a kitchen faster than it damages the appliance, so it is worth acting on the same day.

Four ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Shut the water off first

At the valve behind or under the machine. An inlet valve that will not close is not going to stop on its own and every hour costs joinery.

  2. 02

Look for where it is going

Overflowing the reservoir, running out of the drain, or appearing under the unit are three different problems.

  3. 03

Check whether the machine is otherwise working

A machine making ice normally while water runs is a valve. A machine doing nothing while water runs is level sensing.

  4. 04

Note whether it started after any work

A supply reconnected without the seal seated, or a valve disturbed during a move, is a common and quick answer.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Water running constantly”
  • “Overflowing the reservoir”
  • “Wet floor with the machine otherwise working”
A causeway running low and straight across clear turquoise water under a bright sky, shallows and seagrass visible through the surface either side of it

About U-Line the ice maker keeps taking water

Close the supply, then diagnose

Shut the water off at the valve behind or under the machine before anything else. An inlet valve that will not close is not going to stop on its own, and a built-in machine puts that water into the cabinet carcase and the floor rather than somewhere you can see it.

The one that damages a kitchen fastest

Everything else on this site can wait a few days. A machine that is taking water and not stopping cannot, because a built-in appliance puts that water into the carcase and the floor rather than somewhere visible. Shutting the supply off is the first instruction on this page for that reason.

Valve, level, or drain

An inlet valve holding open on a piece of debris is the most common cause and the one that behaves worst — it will sometimes close once and never again. Level sensing that cannot tell the reservoir is full produces the same symptom for a different reason, and the maker logs a high water level as its own number on these boards. And a drain that has backed up reads as water running when the water is arriving perfectly normally.

Questions about U-Line the ice maker keeps taking water

Will turning it off and on fix it?

Sometimes, for a while, and that is the trap. A valve that has closed once after being power-cycled has not been repaired; it has been given an opportunity to fail again while nobody is home.

Is the filter relevant here?

Indirectly. Debris that gets past a filter is what holds a valve open, so a filter that is long overdue makes this more likely rather than less.
