Symptom
U-Line the ice maker is freezing up
A block instead of cubes, ice bridging the mold, a bin frozen into one lump, or an evaporator growing a coat. Different machines fail this way for different reasons, and the shape of the ice is the clue.

Four ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
Harvest not releasing at the right moment
On a crescent maker the mold heater; on a clear ice machine the hot gas valve. Ice that has over-frozen before release bridges and jams.
Clear ice machine repair from $225 -
An auger struggling in a nugget machine
Wet ice, then slushy, then a jam. The maker logs it as its own error and a motor pushing against a seized auger destroys the gearbox behind it.
Nugget ice machine and auger repair from $285 -
Ice that is never used
In a bin that is not insulated for storage, ice slowly melts and refreezes into one mass. That is the machine working as designed and the household not using it.
Diagnostic visit from $95 -
Airflow and defrost
Frost on the evaporator that never clears is the same problem here as in a refrigerator.
Cooling and defrost repair from $185

01
Look at what the ice looks like
Fused cubes, a solid block, or frost on the machine's own surfaces are three separate stories with three separate answers.
-
02
Ask how much ice the household uses
Ice that is never used slowly melts and refreezes into one mass. That is the machine working and the household not.
-
03
Listen to a nugget machine before touching it
Grinding or laboring means the auger is in trouble, and the right move is to switch it off rather than to keep trying.
-
04
Check the door and the bin seal
Warm humid air reaching a cold bin frosts everything it touches, and in this climate it does it quickly.

About U-Line the ice maker is freezing up
Look at the shape of the ice before anything else
Cubes that have fused into a sheet, a block in the bin, or a machine that is icing internally are three separate stories. The first is a harvest question, the second is usually the bin sitting too cold or the ice never being used, and the third is airflow or a defrost circuit.
Read the ice
The shape tells you where to look. Cubes that fused after they were made are a storage and usage question. Ice bridging across a mold before it releases is harvest — a mold heater on a crescent maker, a hot gas valve on a clear ice machine. Frost growing on the machine's own surfaces is airflow, defrost, or humid air getting in.
The nugget machine is the exception
On a nugget machine, ice that came out wet, then slushy, then stopped is the auger and the cylinder it runs in, and this is the one appliance on this site where the honest first instruction is to stop using it. A motor pushing against a seized auger is destroying the gearbox behind it while you decide what to do.

Questions about U-Line the ice maker is freezing up
We only use it at weekends. Is that the problem?
It can be the whole problem. A storage bin is insulated, not refrigerated. Ice sitting in it for days melts a little and refreezes, and after a couple of cycles it is one lump.
Should I chip it out?
Not with anything metal, and not around the mold or the auger. Switch the machine off, let it stand, and let the ice release itself. A cracked mold or a bent auger is a much larger bill than the one you started with.
