Symptom

U-Line the interior light is not working

The maker prints two lines about lighting, and between them they cover most of these calls. One of them is a mode. The other is a bracket on the bottom of the door that costs nothing to adjust.

  • From $95 diagnostic, credited to the repair
  • 59 cities and neighborhoods covered
  • OEM parts available on order

Four ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Check the cabinet is cold

The maker's own row: if the unit is cooling and the light does not illuminate, it may be in Sabbath mode.

  2. 02

    Try the light button

On many models the light runs on a timer and can simply be off.

  3. 03

Watch the light with the door closing

A light that stays on wants the actuator bracket adjusted, which is the manual's own answer.

  4. 04

Check the lighting settings on current models

Brightness, color and the on-after-close timer are all settings, and one of them is usually the answer.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “No light with the door open”
  • “The light stays on with the door closed”
  • “Light works but the display is dark”
A bright South Florida kitchen photographed along the counter run in morning light, pale off-white cabinetry and a light stone worktop, a stainless undercounter refrigeration drawer unit built in beneath the counter at the right, a turquoise glass splashback catching the light.

About U-Line the interior light is not working

Check whether the cabinet is cold

The maker's own row: if the unit is cooling and the light does not illuminate, it may be in Sabbath mode. That mode turns the interior light and the display off together and leaves everything else running, which is why a working appliance with no light is usually not broken.

Two rows in the manual cover most of this

A light that will not come on when the appliance is cooling may be Sabbath mode. A light that stays on when the door closes wants the switch turned off if there is one, and the actuator bracket at the bottom of the door adjusted. Neither is a part and both are in U-Line's own troubleshooting table.

The switch is shared with the door alert

The same reed switch or plunger that tells the control the door is open is what turns the light on, which is why lighting problems and beeping problems arrive together. If both are misbehaving, that is one repair rather than two.

Questions about U-Line the interior light is not working

The light works but the display is dark.

That combination is not Sabbath mode, which takes both. Look at the display wiring — the manual's own first check is that both ends are firmly connected.

Does BrightShield matter if it is off?

Not to the refrigeration. It is an antimicrobial light and the appliance cools perfectly without it, so it is worth knowing rather than worth panicking about.
