One cabinet, two jobs
U-Line's freezers convert. The same cabinet holds freezer temperatures or refrigerator temperatures depending on how it is set, which is genuinely useful in a kitchen where the requirement changes — and which is why the first question on a freezer that is not freezing is what it is currently being asked to do.
Frost, with a number attached
The manual gives the threshold: frost on the evaporator plate vents is normal and clears on the off cycle; a quarter of an inch or more is not. Having a published figure turns an argument about whether there is 'a lot of ice' into a measurement anybody can take, and in a humid kitchen that measurement is usually about the door rather than about the defrost circuit.
Why the door matters more here
Every opening loads the cabinet with air carrying a great deal of water, and all of it ends up as frost on the coldest surface. On a freezer that frost then holds the door open a little further, which lets in more air, which makes more frost. It compounds in a way a refrigerator's does not, so a marginal seal on a freezer is worth correcting sooner.

One of these cabinets is an outdoor model, and a freezer outdoors in August is doing the hardest work anything in this catalog does. It is built for it — with the condenser service interval that goes with it, which is shorter than the one a kitchen unit needs.
What to have ready when you call
The model number from the plate on the upper right or the rear wall inside, what the appliance is doing rather than what you think has failed, whether it is built into a run or standing in a gap, and anything showing on the display — photographed rather than described. Questions about U-Line convertible freezers
It is not freezing. What should I check first?
Which appliance it currently is. These cabinets convert, and a convertible unit quietly running as a refrigerator produces exactly this complaint with nothing wrong. It is the cheapest check on the page and nobody thinks to make it.
How much frost is too much?
U-Line publishes the number, which is unusually helpful. Frost on the evaporator plate vents is normal and melts during each off cycle. A quarter of an inch of build-up or more is not, and at that point something is putting more moisture in than the defrost can take out — nearly always the door, in this climate.
Ice cream is soft but everything else is frozen.
That is a cabinet sitting a few degrees warm rather than one that has failed, and ice cream is the most sensitive thing in it. Measure with a thermometer before assuming — it is more often a door or a defrost question than a refrigeration one.
Why does a sensor failure look worse on a freezer?
Because there is no margin. When the maker's backup mode takes over after a thermistor fails, it runs a fixed cycle rather than holding a temperature. A refrigerator in that state sits a few degrees warm and looks nearly right; a freezer spends part of its time above freezing, so the complaint arrives as thawing rather than as drifting.
