    Ice maker not making ice

    The most searched thing about this make by a wide margin. Almost every cause is on the water side rather than the cold side, and the first three checks cost nothing and are the answer more often than everything else put together.

    Standing water in the bin, water under the unit, or a machine that stops with a full reservoir. Half the diagnosis is a question nobody asks first: does this installation have a drain pump at all, or does it run to a gravity drain?

    The ice maker keeps taking water

    A machine that fills continuously, overflows, or keeps its inlet valve open is doing something with a short list of causes — and one of them will damage a kitchen faster than it damages the appliance, so it is worth acting on the same day.

    The ice maker is freezing up

    A block instead of cubes, ice bridging the mold, a bin frozen into one lump, or an evaporator growing a coat. Different machines fail this way for different reasons, and the shape of the ice is the clue.

    One of the most searched things about U-Line's crescent makers, and it is not a metaphor: the bin arm is how a mechanical ice maker knows to stop. An arm that rests up is a machine that has been told the bin is full, and it will sit there indefinitely being perfectly healthy.

    Diagnostic visit

    We find out what is actually wrong before anybody quotes a part. On a U-Line that starts with a question most visits skip: is the appliance reporting a problem, or is it in a mode somebody enabled by accident? A unit that lights up and will not cool is showroom mode as often as it is a sealed system, and the two are not the same conversation. The fee is credited toward the work when you go ahead.

    Control board and display repair

    The part people reach for first and the one the maker itself says is rarely the cause. Its own manual calls the main control very robust and asks for the board to be fully diagnosed before it is removed — and then prints the flow chart to do it with. We follow that chart, because the alternative is an expensive part fitted to a problem it does not fix.

    Door switch and door alert repair

    The unit beeps every minute and shows a door icon, and the door is shut. On this make the door is the one error that reaches the display and makes a sound, which means it is also the one people live with for weeks. It is a switch and a magnet, and the maker's own power flow chart ends on replacing it.

    Condenser and airflow service

    The maker's own first answer for a unit that is not cold enough is the grille and the condenser, and on an undercounter appliance it is right more often than anywhere else: the condenser sits behind a grille at floor level, in a kitchen, under a counter. It fills with dust and lint, and the unit does not complain — it just runs longer and holds less.

    Outdoor and marine unit service

    A quarter of this catalog lives outside, and salt air is a different repair rather than a different setting. An outdoor unit's condenser breathes whatever the yard has, its fasteners corrode, and on the Marine models the appliance is on a boat. It is priced above the indoor condenser service because it is more work, and it is scheduled differently because the interval between services is shorter.

    Evaporator fan and running-noise repair

    A U-Line that has become noisy usually has one of two things wrong, and the maker names both: refrigeration tubing touching the cabinet, and a fan blade obstructed by wiring, foam or packaging. Neither is expensive. Both sound alarming through a cabinet door in a quiet room, which is why the call usually comes at night.

    Ice maker repair

    The crescent machines — U-Line has been making them since 1962 and they are the simplest cold appliance in the range. A fill valve, a mold, a heater to release the ice and a mechanical harvest. When one stops making ice the cause is nearly always water arriving, water leaving, or the harvest sticking, and the three are told apart quickly.

    Everything between the shut-off and the reservoir.     Drain pump and drain repair

    Where there is no gravity drain, an ice machine has a pump, and the maker logs a circuit error for it — P1, qualified in the same breath as only if the unit has a drain pump. Half this job is establishing whether yours has one. The other half matters more than it sounds: on a built-in machine a drain problem damages joinery before it makes a puddle.

    Ice machine cleaning and descaling

    The cheapest service on this site and the one that prevents the most expensive. U-Line signals for a cleaning cycle every six cumulative months of ice making and is explicit that only its own ice machine cleaner may be used. In South Florida that six-month interval is optimistic: scale is what ends ice machines here, and it does it quietly.

Small parts and awkward access, and one particular trap: a light that will not come on is a Sabbath-mode symptom before it is a lamp, and a light that stays on when the door shuts is usually the bracket rather than the switch.

    Built-in removal and reinstallation

    Its own line on the invoice because it is its own work, and because it is invisible in a quote that does not name it. Nearly every U-Line is under a counter, many are behind a custom panel, and several are in a run with an anti-tip bracket and a fixed water connection. Getting the appliance out without damaging the joinery, and back in aligned, is a real part of most repairs on this make.

About U-Line ice makers

The oldest thing U-Line makes

Crescent ice makers are what the company has been building since 1962, and the design has the virtue of its age: a fill valve, a mold, a heater, a mechanical arm. There is very little to go wrong and most of what does go wrong is on the water side rather than the cold side.

Three questions in order

Is water arriving — shut-off, filter, line, inlet valve. Is the machine being told to stop — the bin arm and the fill limit. Is the harvest working — the mold heater that releases the crescents. Almost every failure on these machines is one of those three, and the first is more likely than the other two together.

No service menu on most of them

Several of these machines have no service mode at all: their manuals carry a troubleshooting table and a wiring diagram and nothing else. That is a fact about the appliance rather than a gap in what we know, and it means the diagnosis is done by measurement — flow, continuity and temperature — rather than by reading a log.

The one that ends these machines

Scale. Everything in an ice maker sits in water, and South Florida water leaves something behind on all of it. A machine that is descaled on a schedule outlives one that is not by years, and it is the cheapest service on this site.

What to have ready when you call

The model number from the plate on the upper right or the rear wall inside, what the appliance is doing rather than what you think has failed, whether it is built into a run or standing in a gap, and anything showing on the display — photographed rather than described. On this make the display shows very little, so what you can see is worth more than usual.

Questions about U-Line ice makers

It has stopped making ice. Where should I start?

The shut-off valve, the filter, and the bin arm — in that order and all three cost nothing. The valve behind or under a built-in machine gets closed during other work more often than anybody admits. A filter at the end of its life does not stop the water, it slows it, so the machine makes less each month rather than stopping. And an arm resting in the up position means the machine has been told the bin is full and will sit there indefinitely being perfectly healthy.

The arm will not stay down.

That is one of the most searched things about these machines and it is not a figure of speech. Ice built up behind the bin, a bin that has not gone fully home, or a linkage knocked during a clean will all hold it up. Lower it by hand and watch: if it lifts again, something is holding it; if it stays and nothing happens, the arm was never the problem.

What is the difference between a crescent ice maker and an ice machine?

The ice and the machinery behind it. A crescent maker freezes water in a mold and releases it with a heater, which makes the familiar half-moon cubes and involves very few moving parts. A clear ice machine freezes moving water slowly to make dense clear cubes, and a nugget machine drives a screw through ice on the wall of a cylinder. They are three different appliances that all produce ice, and they fail in completely different ways.

How much ice should it be making?

Less than a freezer-door ice maker in a full-size refrigerator, and that surprises people. These are undercounter machines with undercounter refrigeration. A machine that has always made about this much and is still making about this much is working; a machine making measurably less each month is describing a restriction.
